Swiatek Out of Semis Contention

Already out of contention for a semifinal spot, World No. 9 Iga Swiatek will now be playing for pride, trying to end the season with a win.

The 2020 French Open champion won two titles in Adelaide and Rome this season and goes into her last match with a 35-15 record.

The 20-year-old began her WTA Finals campaign with a 2-6, 4-6 defeat to Maria Sakkari. She had a better start in the second match against Aryna Sabalenka, winning the first set by breaking the Belarusian twice in the first set, but Sabalenka made a strong comeback into the contest, breaking the Polish player twice in each of the next two sets while getting broken just one more time in the match.

Sabalenka’s 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 ended Swiatek’s hopes of qualifying for the semifinals and sealed a final four spot for Badosa.

Badosa Extends Streak to Eight Matches

She started the year as World No. 70 but took some giant strides this year, winning her first two WTA titles and breaking into the top 10 in the world last week. Now, the 24-year-old Paula Badosa is looking to end the year on a high.

The Spaniard began the WTA Finals campaign with two straight sets wins and sealed a spot in the semifinals even before the final round of matches in the group. She demolished Sabalenka 6-4, 6-0 in the first match and then defeated Sakkari 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the second match to extend her streak to eight matches in a row.

The series of wins began at the Indian Wells Open where she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final to claim her first-ever WTA 1000 title.

The World no. 10 will be looking to keep her streak going in the final match of the round robin phase and enter the semifinals with a perfect record.
