Maria Sakkari v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be their 12th meeting, with Sakkari leading 6-5 from their previous encounters. They are 2-2 from four meetings this year. Kontaveit won at the Grampians Trophy semifinal, but fell in the Round of 32 in Madrid. Sakkari won again at the Olympics in the Round of 64, but lost the Ostrava Open final in September.

Sakkari Edges Out Top Seed to Reach the Semis

The first-ever Greek woman to qualify for the WTA Finals, Maria Sakkari has reached the semifinals of the season-ending tournament with a thrilling three-set win over Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
The 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win in the last round robin match of the Chichén Itzá group ended the campaign for the top seed while propelling the Greek into the final four.
Sakkari, who converted 8 of 13 break points and saved 6 of 12, made the most of the 19 double faults made by the World No. 2 in a must win match, which lasted two hours and 47 minutes.
With the win, Sakkari is now 38-19 for the season. She hasn’t won a title this year, but finished runner-up in Ostrava and featured in six more semifinals, which included last four finishes at the French Open and the U.S. Open.
Currently sitting on a career-high ranking of No. 6, Sakkari began her WTA Finals campaign with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Iga Swiatek. She couldn’t keep the winning run going in the next match, though, falling to the in-form Paula Badosa 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the second match.

She will be hoping to reach a second final of the season on Tuesday.

In-form Kontaveit Looking to Overcome Last Match Defeat

Anett Kontaveit has been unstoppable over the last one month.

The World No. 8 won back-to-back titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca and began her WTA Finals campaign with two dominant straight set wins, but she couldn’t keep the winning record intact as she was beaten by Garbine Muguruza in the final group match, which not only prevented her from taking a perfect record into the semifinals but also ended her 12-match win streak.

The eighth seed Kontaveit outplayed Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-4 in the first match and overpowered Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-0 in the second match to seal a spot in the semifinals. She however lost her final group match 4-6, 4-6 to Muguruza.

The 25-year-old has had an outstanding season, winning the Cleveland Open, the Ostrava Open, The Kremlin Cup and the Transylvania Open titles. She also shared the Grampians Trophy titles with Ann Li after the final was called off and finished runner-up in Eastbourne. Bringing a 47-16 season record to the semifinals she will be high on confidence and will look to reach another final with a win on Tuesday.

Sakkari v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

It’s an evenly matched contest with little to choose between the two. Their past 11 meetings are an indication that neither has been able to dominate the rivalry. Expect another cracking contest. Three sets look imminent with form slightly favouring Kontaveit.

Also the fact that Kontaveit has won six semifinals this year and Sakkari has lost six of her seven semifinal matches will give the Estonian the psychological edge in Tuesday’s semifinal.
