Roberto Bautista Agut v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The two players have met just once on the ATP Tour, in the 2021 Rome Masters. Agut emerged victorious in straight sets with 7-6(5), 6-3.

Garin, Making Waves on the Tour

Cristian Garin may be the World No. 17 at the moment but it is fair to say that a great bulk of his success can be attributed to his clay-court heroics. He has five ATP titles to his name – all of which came on clay.

Last year, he won his home tournament at the Chile Open and followed it with impressive results in the Monte Carlo Masters, Estoril Open, Madrid Masters, and French Open. Garin was also a quarterfinalist in the clay events of Bastad and Gstaad but the moment action switched to hard courts, he lost his groove.

The 25-year-old lost in the early rounds of all American tournaments leading to the US Open. He concluded the season with a first-round exit in the Antwerp Open.

Agut, Boasting Experience and Form

By contrast, Roberto Bautista Agut has proven himself to be a far more exceptional player although, that has come with experience and age. The 33-year-old, currently ranked No. 19 on the tour, ended 2021 with a tally of 29-25 with two runner-up trophies from Open Sud de France and Qatar Open.

Unlike Garin, the Spaniard has shown a great fondness for all three surfaces with one of his best runs coming in the Miami Masters where he was a semifinalist. He also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Bautista Agut also had a good run in the ATP Cup last year. He made it to the semifinal after moving past Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, he ultimately succumbed to Matteo Berrettini.

Garin v Agut Prediction and Tip

This is a great opportunity for Garin to show that he can play just as well on any other surface. He is riding high on confidence following a superb last season. However, Agut is far more experienced and has the maturity to handle this kind of game.

The Spaniard will start as the favourite but don’t be surprised if this turns into a slogfest.
