In her last action in 2021, Victoria Azarenka suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Spain’s Paula Badosa in dramatic final at Indian Wells which lasted over three hours. The Belarusian has begun 2022 by getting her revenge over the Spaniard in the first round of Adelaide International.
Badosa went a break up twice in the first set, but Aazarenka responded immediately on both the occasions not allowing the Spaniard to dictate terms. Azarenka got a third break in the eighth game and then held serve to close out the set. Having seized the lead, she started dominating the contest. The 32-year-old didn’t face a single break point, while she broke Badosa twice to send the fourth seed packing with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
In the one-hour-and-17-minute contest, Azarenka made 24 winners against Badosa’s 20 and 14 unforced errors against the Spaniard’s 18.
A 21-time champion and a 20-time runner-up, Azarenka reached just one final last year, at Indian Wells which she lost to Badosa 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). Overall she finished the year with a 28-9 record, winning 76% of her matches.
Making her debut in Adelaide, Azarenka has made a solid start but faces tricky opponent in the next round, who caused a major upset in the first round.

Hon Stuns Kvitova
Local hope and World No. 263 Priscilla Hon stunned two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in an engaging three-set contest on Tuesday.
What’s more, the match saw Hon fightback after being down 6-7, 2-4 in the match. The 23-year-old got two breaks of serve to seal the second and then dominated the third to beat the World no. 17 Czech 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 for a first top-20 win of her career.
In the two-hour-and-21-minute contest Hon struck 8 aces, one less than Kvitova, and won 84% of first serve points.She also converted four of six break points, while saving one of two.
A four-time winner on the ITF tour, Hon will be aiming to reach her second tour-level quarterfinal on Thursday. She made it to the last eight in Seoul in 2019.
Azarenka v Hon Prediction and Tip
The experienced Azarenka will definitely start the favourite but she will be wary of Hon after she caused a massive first-round upset. Hon may give Azarenka a tough fight as well, but the Belarusian should still win and advance.
