Medvedev v Berrettini Head to Head

Medvedev and Berrettini have been involved in two, career, head-to-head meetings till date and currently holds a 2-0 lead over the Italian. Their last meeting came in the title decider at the ATP Cup last year, with the Russian taking his homeland to its maiden championship win.

Ending his last season with a runner-up finish at the ATP Finals after lifting his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, Medvedev saw his new season get off to the worst possible start after going down in his ATP Cup opener against Ugo Humbert.

After pipping the Frenchman in a closely fought tiebreak in the opening set, Medvedev slipped up in the next two to eventually go down in three sets. Though the deciding set went to a tiebreak, Humbert came out tops in key moments to win the contest.

Licking his wounds from the defeat in his tournament opener, the Russian got his act together in his next against Australian Alex de Minaur. Up against the Aussie and the raucous home support for him, Medvedev bested him in straight sets.

After taking the opening-set by a comfortable 6-4 margin, Medvedev found a higher gear in the second to cruise home in straight sets.

Facing his toughest opponent in the event so far in the form of World No.7 Italian Matteo Berrettini, the Russian has to put in another big effort to finish on the right end of the result.

Giving him a burst of belief and confidence going into this clash is the 2-0 head-to-head lead he holds over the big-hitting Italian. However, the deficit will also spur Berrettini to get one over the Russian on Thursday and Medvedev will be wary not to let complacency creep into his system.

Berrettini Seeks to Derive Confidence From Humbert Win

His last on-court meeting with Medvedev ended in defeat in the title-deciding clash at last year’s ATP Cup. The loss, however, spurred him on to add two more Tour titles to his career tally.

Leading the charge for Italy alongside Jannik Sinner in the ongoing ATP Cup, Berrettini opened his campaign with a loss to Australian Alex de Minaur. After falling to a loss in the opening set, the Italian did lift his game in the second but couldn’t turn the tide in his favor. The second set went to a tiebreak that saw the diminutive Aussie pip him to a win.

Stung by his defeat in the opening clash, Berrettini came out all guns blazing in his next group-stage fixture against Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

The intensity that he brought to bear on his opponent on the day paid him the desired dividend as the Italian took the first set 6-4 and pipped the Frenchman in a tiebreak in the second.

Up against current World No. 2 Medvedev in his next on Thursday, Berrettini will eye payback for his loss in the championship clash at the same event last year.

While the win over Humbert will give the Italian confidence going into the Medvedev clash, the beefy Italian will have to be at his menacing best to get his first over the Russian.
