Kenin  Looks to Make Amends After QF Finish in Adelaide

Getting her new season off to a decent start, the 2020 Australian Open champion reached the the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International.

Having opened her campaign with a clinical and comprehensive 7-5, 7-5 win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, Kenin, currently ranked 12th in singles,  pulled off a hard earned win over rising Australian star Ajla Tomljanovic.

After falling to a defeat in the opening set, the American raised her game up a notch to take the second to a tiebreaker and eventually winning it 7-6 (7-5). With the momentum shifting quite spectacularly in her favor, Kenin went for broke in the decider and her intensity brought her the desired reward as she broke the Aussie’s serve and held on to her lead to eventually scrape home 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The win saw her earn a quarter-final ticket against current World No.1 Ashleigh Barty. However, against the reigning Wimbledon champion, Kenin came up short and was easily worked over in straight sets by the seasoned Aussie.

Falling two levels short of her first title of the season, Kenin would look to amends as she opens her campaign at the Sydney International on Monday.

However, between the American and a place in the next round stands tricky Russian Daria Kasatkina. Though the American will take a slender 1-0 head-to-head lead into the clash, the Russian registered a semifinal finish at her last event and won’t be easy to beat.

Up against Nuria-Parrizas Diaz in the quarter-final, the Russian thumped her 7-5, 6-1 to secure passage to the last four. However, she couldn’t sustain her level in the semifinal as she fell to fell to a tame loss to American Amanda Anisimova to bow out of the tournament.

Moving on to her next, the Sydney International, Kasatkina will open her campaign against 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. She couldn’t have asked for a tougher opening clash as she lost her only previous head-to-head outing against the American and would have to play at her very best to come out tops this time round.
