Popyrin Looking for Consistency in 2022

After an up and down 2021 season, Alexei Popyrin will be hoping for more consistency in 2022. The Aussie however wouldn’t be too happy after his Melbourne showing, where he won his first round match against Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in straight sets, but went down to the Netherland’s Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.

The World No. 59, who captured his maiden ATP title by defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the Singapore Open final last year, finished the 2021 season with a 22-22 record. While he triumphed in Singapore, he struggled in most of the other tournaments, not even reaching the last eight in any of the other tournaments he featured in.

Some of Popyrin’s other notable performances last season included runs to the Round of 16 in Madrid and the Paris Masters and third round finishes at the U.S. Open and the Miami Masters.

Despite the title, Popyrin will be disappointed with his  showing last season and would be aiming for better returns this year.

The 6’5″ player will look to get off to a good start in Sydney, if he does win his first round contest, he will face a huge second round test against the third seed Daniel Evans, who has a first-round bye.

Season Opener for Martinez

Pedro Martinez will be playing his first match of the season on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, who was initially seen as a clay court player, put up some solid performances last year on other surfaces as well. One of his biggest accomplishments was a run to the third round of Wimbledon on debut.

Martinez also reached a maiden ATP final in Kitzbuhel, finishing runner-up to Casper Ruud in the clay court event.

Before 2021, he had a 2-3 record from five matches on hard courts, however he played a lot more on the surface last year, finishing with a 7-9 record, which included a quarterfinal finish in Moscow.

Having fallen out of the top 100 last year, he made a strong comeback to finish the season as World no. 61 and will be hoping to build on that this season.

Popyrin v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Popyrin is definitely a superior player on hard courts and will be backing himself to do well at home. Expect the Aussie to start with a win on Tuesday.
