Can Paire Start on a Winning Note?

Last year was a tough one for Benoit Paire, who tested positive for COVID-19 thrice. He was forced to pull out of the U.S. Open and then tested positive again before the Hamburg Open.

He tested positive once again in the last week of December, just before beginning his preparations for the Australian Open. Irked by the testing and quarantine rules, the Frenchman took to social media stating, “Hello, my name is Benoit Paire, and for the 250th time, I am positive for COVID.”

He returned to action following isolation protocols in Melbourne, but lost his first round match to Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen, retiring from the contest with the score at 6-4, 3-6, 2-5.

Ranked 47th in the world, Paire is coming off a terrible 13-30 season, in which he drew flak for his lack of intent in some of the matches.

A three-time champion on the tour, the Frenchman reached just three quarterfinals last season, which included one at the Cincinnati Open.

The 32-year-old has been unpredictable these days, but with the Australian Open a few days away he would like to enter the season’s first Grand Slam in good form.

Kokkinakis Off To a Good Start

Thanasi Kokkinakis has got his season off to a good start, reaching the semifinals of Adelaide 1.

Hampered by injury, Kokkinakis has played very little over the last few years, but the 25-year-old Australian was impressive in his first event of the season.

Kokkinakis ousted John Millman in straight sets, then stunned fourth seed Frances Tiafoe in a come-from-behind three-set Round of 16 victory, before winning another three-setter to knock out Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the quarterfinal. His run at Adelaide-1 ended with a straight sets defeat to eventual champion Gael Monfils in the semifinals.

Handed a wild card for Adelaide-2, Kokkinakis will look to make the most of the opportunity as he prepares for his sixth Australian Open appearance starting next week. And the big-serving Aussie will fancy his chances against Paire in the first round.

Paire v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

Paire can be unpredictable. He has a superior record and is far more experienced than his opponent. But he has shown a lack of focus over the last year and is clearly frustrated with the quarantines, which can impact his game.

Kokkinakis is coming off a huge tournament and will be desperate to build on that and it won’t be a surprise if he pulls off another big win on Tuesday. Expect a good game, with Kokkinakis advancing for a second round match with John Isner, who is the second seed and has a first-round bye.
