Nakashima Looking to Build on 2021

Nakashima is looking to build on his achievements in 2021, which justified his decision to abandon his college career after just one year.

He began the year by winning the Challenger event in Quimper, France and then began to appear regularly on the main tour, where he reached back-to-back finals in July, beaten by Cameron Norrie in Los Cabos and John Isner in Atlanta.

His rise up the rankings saw him become a contender for the NextGen ATP finals in Milan, and, after his place was secured, he went on to win another Challenger tournament in France, in Brest.

The Americans qualified out of his round robin group in Milan but lost in the semi-finals.

This will be his first match since that defeat to compatriot Sebastian Korda in Italy.

Vesely Made to Qualify in Sydney

It has been two long years since Vesely reached his third ATP final and won his second tournament in Pune, India.

Since then, he has struggled for form, and 2021 was a particularly challenging year for the Czech number one, who failed to get beyond the second-round stage of any of the Grand Slam events and only making the main draw once of any of the Masters tournaments.

To try and remedy his issues, he spent the second part of last season primarily on the Challenger tour, winning a title in France in October.

The Czech will be hoping that provides him with the confidence he needs to mount a sustained challenge on the senior tour this year.

2022 did not start well for Vesely – he was beaten by another American Tommy Paul, the world number 43, in the first round in Adelaide last week.

However, he will take heart from his performances in the qualifying competition in Sydney which he was forced to enter.

First, he beat Lucas Pouille of France, and then the American, Denis Kudla, both in straight sets, to earn his place in the main draw.

Nakashima v Vesely Prediction and Tip
