Alex de Minaur v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

The pair have never  played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22-year old Australian, and the Italian, who is three years younger.

Top Ranked Australian De Minaur

As the top-ranked Australian, de Minaur carries his nation’s hopes in the main draw, although if they are hoping to see success in Melbourne, local fans had better pin their hopes on Ashleigh Barty in the women’s event.

The fact is that de Minaur’s progress has somewhat stalled in the past year, although there is still time for him to re-discover the form that made him one of the most highly rated young players in the world in 2020.

2021 began brightly for the Australian. He won his fourth senior career title in Antalya, and then added a fifth to his collection on the grass of Eastbourne.

But then he tested positive for Covid, and not only did he have to miss out on the Olympics, but struggled performance-wise for much of the rest of the season.

Having missed the 2020 tournament with an abdominal strain, he will be keen to improve his record in Melbourne where the furthest he has reached so far is the third round twice.

De Minaur’s season began with the ATP Cup, where, playing for Australia, he pulled off a notable victory over Matteo Berrettini of Italy, the world number seven and then defeated Ugo Humbert of France, although sandwiched between those two was a defeat to Daniil Medvedev, the world number two.

He has not played since.

Musetti Struggling for Form

This is his first appearance in the Australian Open for the Italian teenager, who burst on to the scene in the first part of 2021.

He finished runner-up in two Challenger tournaments at the start of the year and then, switching his attention to the main tour, reached the semi-finals in Acapulco, beating Diego Schwartzman along the way, and, in the process, became the youngest player to break into the top 100.

Another semi-final in Lyon followed and then, at the French Open, he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and took the world number one Novak Djokovic and eventual winner to five sets, before having to retire injured.

However, the decision to take time off from tennis to complete his studies and off the court issues began to affect his form, and he really struggled in the second half of the season.

His exploits earlier in the year meant he qualified for the NextGen ATP finals in Milan, but he scarcely did himself justice in front of his hone fans and was knocked out in the round robin stage.

2022 has not started well for him either. In his only competitive match of the season to date, he was beaten by Taro Daniel of Japan, the world 120, beaten in three sets in the opening round in Adelaide.

de Minaur v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Despite De Minaur still searching for his best form, he is playing against a man shorn of confidence after his struggles on and off the court over the past six months. Anything other than a straightforward win for the Australian would be a turn up for the books.

Tip: De Minaur to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
