Isner is back at the Australian Open after a year’s absence.

He was one of the layers that chose to skip the event last year rather than have to undergo the mandatory two weeks quarantine in a government sanctioned facility.

Last year saw something of a return to form for the big serving American, winning his first singes event for two years in Atlanta, and also clinching the doubles’ title in Los Cabos, Mexico.

His record in Melbourne, despite the surface appearing to suit his big hitting game is surprisingly modest, with two fourth round appearances in 2010 and 2016 the best he has managed.

And he has not been in the best of form so date in 2022, only winning one of out his three matches playing in the ATP Cup for America, and that was against a player ranked 239 in the world, and losing his opening round match in Adelaide last week, beaten in three sets by the Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis, the world number 145.

This is the second successive year that Cressy has made the min draw of the Australian Open. Last year he came through qualifying and won his opening round match before losing to the world number three Alexander Zverev of Germany.

The withdrawal of Dominic Thiem from the tournament meant that he was spared having to compete in the qualifying competition this time round.

He has never been further in a Grand Slam yet, although he has twice made the second round of his home Grand Slam in New York.

However, Melbourne already has a special place in his heart this year.

At the Summer Set event he came through qualifying and then saved two match points in beating Reilly Opelika, the second seed and world number 25. He advanced to the semi-finals where he claimed another notable scalp in the form of the third seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, reaching his first ATP Final before losing to Rafael Nadal.

And then last week he reached the quarter-final in Sydney, beating both Adrian Mannarino of France and Dusan Lajovic of Serbia along the way, before his run was halted by Dan Evans of Great Britain.
