Tuesday’s meeting against Gasquet will be the second time he opens up his Australian Open campaign against a fellow countryman. At the 2018 edition, he was beaten by Jeremy Chardy in five sets.

It has been precisely three years since Richard Gasquet last competed at the Australian Open. The French veteran has nursed a few injuries at the most inopportune time of the year, forcing him to adjust his schedule and miss out on the Australian summer swing.
His 2022 campaign started in a terrible fashion. He skipped successive weeks of warm tournaments after testing positive for Covid-19. That means, his season will officially start at the Australian Open.
Injuries in the past year have curtailed Gasquet’s ambitions of one glorious swansong at tour level. As a result of his extraordinary ranking slip, the French one-hander has been busy playing Challenger tournaments to restore a semblance of normality to his ranking status.
Gasquet’s last win at the Australian Open came in 2018, when he made the third round. Since then he has missed three editions on the trot.
