Cristian Garin v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these two players with Garin winning both times. Both matches came last year, at Wimbledon and Nordea respectively and Garin has dropped just one set so far.

Garin Survives Bagnis Comeback

It hadn’t been the best start to the season for Garin when he lost two of his three ATP Cup singles matches in the first week.

And while those losses did come at the hands of high-pedigree players in Roberto Bautista-Agut and Casper Ruud, he would have hoped for a better start at this season’s opening Grand Slam.

For a moment it looked like things were going the way Garin would have liked too – the Chilean clay court specialist was two sets up against Facundo Bagnis and then broke his opponent to look like he was on his way to a straight-set victory.

Only the Bagnis wasn’t done. He broke right back, survived five break-points and wrapped up the set before taking the fourth in a tie-breaker.

Fortunately for Garin, he survived the Bagnis onslaught to carve out a five-set win and seal his second round berth.

Martinez Overcomes Another Argentine

Like Garin, Martinez also needed to overcome an Argentine player to make it to round two and it turned out to be an interesting first set battle that gave him the edge.

The 24-year-old, who had made the third round at last year’s Australian Open and with three Challenger titles under his belt over the past three seasons, was challenged to a 32-point tie-breaker in the first set before coming through in four.

Martinez won 7-6 (15), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match lasting nearly four hours after missing eight set-points in the opening set.

The Spaniard, who had lasted just a round at Sydney International earlier this month before crashing out in straight sets in the second, will now hope to recover quickly enough to challenge his top-20 opponent.

Garin v Martinez Prediction and Tip

While Garin did falter a tad in the first, it looks extremely likely he will come through in straight sets in this second round match given his opponent’s preference for clay too.
