Monfils Makes a Brisk Start

Gael Monfils served 11 aces and struck 36 winners as he stormed into the second round of the Australian Open with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Federico Coria.

Dominating the contest from start to finish, the Frenchman saved all six of the break points that he faced in the match, while breaking his opponent twice in the first set, thrice in the second and once in the third to win the one-hour-and-35-minute contest 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

The world No. 20 showed no signs of the neck injury that forced him to retire from the contest against Thiago Monteiro in Adelaide-2 on Wednesday.

After an up-and-down 2021, Monfils has made a solid start to the season. The 35-year-old kicked off the new year by capturing his 11th career title by triumphing in Adelaide-1. It was Monfils’ first title since Rotterdam 2020.

Bublik Holds Off Lucky Loser

Alexander Bublik rallied from a set down to hold off American lucky loser Ernesto Escobedo in the first round on Monday.

The Kazakh didn’t start well, conceding a break in the sixth game of the first set and failing to capitalise on four break point chances. Escobedo wrapped up the first set in 45 minutes, and then went a break up in the second to take a 3-5 lead. But he couldn’t close out the set as Bublik rebounded. The World No. 37 got the break back and remained on top in the tiebreak to seal the second set.

It was all Bublik from there on, breaking his opponent twice in the second and once in the third for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-3 victory in two hours and 32 minutes.

Bublik struck 30 aces in the match to Escobedo’s 3 and ht 82 winners against the American’s 18. He also made a staggering 67 unforced errors, 44 more than his opponent.

The win was Bublik’s first of 2022 after he was sent packing in the first round of Adelaide-2 by Aleksandar Vukic.

A two-time finalist on the tour last year, Bublik is making a fourth main draw appearance at the Melbourne major, but he is yet to go past the second round. Will he make it to the Round of 32 this year?
