Khachanov Rallies Past Kudla
World No. 30 Karen Khachanov of Russia overcame a first-set deficit to beat the United States’ Denis Kudla in the first round on Monday.
The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist was slow off the blocks as Kudla clinched the first set in less than 30 minutes. But the Russian hit back with a break in the second and two breaks in the third to take a two-sets-to-one lead.
Kudla regained his touch in the fourth set, racing to a 4-1 lead, but he couldn’t hold on to the advantage for long as Khachanov got the break back and then sealed the contest in the fourth-set tiebreak. The 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory came in two hours and 29 minutes.
The 6’6″ Russian, who won 87% first serve points, struck 17 aces and 54 winners in the match.
Coming off a 35-24 season, Khachanov has had a good start in 2022. He was a finalist in Adelaide-1, finishing runner-up to Gael Monfils, and reached the last eight at Adelaide-2, falling to Arthur Rinderknech.
Into his sixth Australian Open main draw, the 25-year-old will be aiming to reach the third round for a fourth consecutive time.

Bonzi Breezes Past Gojowczyk
After winning a staggering six ATP Challenger titles from seven finals last year, France’s Benjamin Bonzi seems ready to step up at the senior level this year. And the first signs were there to be seen at the Australian Open on Monday, where he picked a straight sets win over Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in the first round.
Making his debut at the Melbourne major, Bonzi didn’t face a single break point in the match as he blasted 21 aces and converted five of 15 break points to dispatch the World No. 82 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 39 minutes.
Ranked No. 63 in the world, the 25-year-old Frenchman didn’t double fault in the match and made just 18 unforced errors. He won 89% points on the back of the first serve and hit 44 winners. Bonzi began the season with a first round defeat at Adelaide-1 and won one and lost one in Adelaide-2.
