What Happened at the 2019 ATP Marrakech?
Benoit Paire stopped Pablo Andujar in his tracks as he looked to win two titles in a row at Marrakech, beating the Spaniard in the final to lift the trophy. This was after Paire had gotten the better of fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andujar beat Gilles Simon in their respective semifinals.
Alexander Zverev, who finished the previous season as a semifinalist at the ATP Finals, also participated in the tournament but was knocked out of the competition in round two.
In the 2018 edition of the tournament, Borna Coric was set to start as the defending champion but he was replaced by Pablo Andujar who, coincidentally, moved on to become the eventual champion.
Among the top seeds were Albert Ramos Vinolas, Kyle Edmund, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Robin Haase, Richard Gasquet, and Mischa Zverev. Out of the top eight seeds, six were defeated in the early rounds itself, with Gasquet and Edmund being the only two players who got through to the penultimate rounds. Other players who rose to the occasion were Andujar, Joao Sousa, and the Russian qualifier Alexey Vatutin.
The final match was played between Andujar and Edmund, with Spaniard taking the victory in straight sets. That was his third Grand Prix Hassan II title and his first trophy since 2015. Andujar ended the season as the World No. 82.
