Naomi Osaka v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

Osaka and Anisimova have no previous head-to-head record. Friday’s much-anticipated clash will be their first official meeting.

Osaka Routs Brengle For 15th Straight Win In Melbourne

Whoever wants to win the Australian Open will likely have to race past Naomi Osaka. The defending champion eased past American Madison Brengle 6-0 6-4 to reach the third round with such assurance that she barely needed to get out of first gear.

Osaka played virtually flawless tennis in the first set as she ruthlessly tore Brengle to shreds. She did not lose a single point behind her first serve, while simultaneously breaking the American three times.

Osaka’s level dipped in the second set and she recovered going down a break before sealing the match. It was her 15th match win at Melbourne Park – the scene of her last Grand Slam title success.

It is almost inconceivable to pick against Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open, but Friday’s encounter against Amanda Anisimova looks like a proper test for the Japanese.

Anisimova Ends Bencic’s Horror Start To 2022

Amanda Anisimova sent Belinda Bencic packing after extending her unbeaten start to the year with a thoroughly deserved straight-set win.

The Swiss woman had only recently recovered from a Covid-19 bout, but was still feeling the ill effects in her sole warm-up tournament at the Sydney International this past week.

Bencic, who would call for a physio onto the court for an apparent injury, made promising starts in both sets. But she did not have the tenacity and physicality to protect her lead.

Anisimova restored early break deficits in each set, hammering down seven aces and winning 74% first-serve points to progress. Her chemistry with new coach Darren Cahill seems to be working well albeit on a trial period.

Osaka v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

The early projections for the women’s draw had many fans licking their lips at the prospect of Naomi Osaka and Amanda Anisimova going toe-to-toe. Anisimova’s purple patch is showing no sign of coming to an end, while Osaka’s grip on her Australian Open title is as tight as that of Boa Constrictor.

At 12/5, those are appealing odds for Anisimova to spring an upset. She is no stranger to ending title defenses having beaten Simona Halep at the French Open in 2019. The American has also got precious little to lose and she is very dangerous when the pressure is off. An upset is certainly not out of question, but backing Anisimova to win a set could be a solid pick.
