Maria Sakkari v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

Sakkari and Kudermetova are currently tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Their last meeting was won by the Greek in three sets in Montreal last season.

Sakkari Stops Qualifier Zheng

Maria Sakkari passed the challenge of Qinwen Zheng with flying colors as she settled their second-round match in straight sets. Sakkari has already bettered last year’s performance in Melbourne considering she lost to Kristina Mladenovic in the first round in the last edition.

But the Greek, who quelled the challenge of Tatjana Maria in the first round, kept the young teenager on the palm of her hand.

The first game almost set the tonic for a tough night for Zheng who battled through five deuces before holding serve. From that moment on, it was one-way traffic as Sakkari romped to take the first set 6-1, winning six games in a row.

In the second set, an early break helped Sakkari’s cause to close out the match in quickfire time. Zheng would respond as the Greek No. 1 stumbled towards the end, winning a service break for the first time in the contest.

Ultimately though, Sakkari managed to pick herself up and broke again, converting her fourth match point.

Kudermerotva Tears Down Ruse

For the second year in a row Veronika Kudermeotva reached the third round of the Australian Open. The Russian thrives when her game is rippling in confidence and momentum as evidenced in last year’s showings in Abu Dhabi and Melbourne.

This time, she came to the Australian Open following her recent runner-up finish at the Melbourne Summer Set 1. And she improves her record for the year to 5-1. Victory over Elena Gabriela Ruse was her latest in this Australian summer series.

Kudermetova looked to be cruising to victory when she took the first set 6-2 in 36 minutes. But the Romanian roared back to take command of the second set, breaking Kudermetova for the first time in the sixth game of the set.

Ruse’s advantage won’t last for long though as a mix of big-hitting and aggressive takes swayed momentum Kudermetova’s way

Sakkari v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova is yet to advance into the second week of a Grand Slam in her career. But if she intends to do it on Friday, she will likely have to do it the hard way. Sakkari has a tendency of playing second fiddle to power-hitting players. Her last three defeats have come against players in that mold. With that being said, I do like the Russian’s chances of getting the job done.
