Ashleigh Barty v Madison Keys Head to Head

Barty holds a 2-1 lead over Keys, last defeating her in the quarterfinal of the 2019 French Open in straight sets.

Barty is on Fire in Melbourne

Local favourite Ashleigh Barty is marching imperiously to her first home major. So far in the tournament, she is yet to lose a set and has been playing with some stunning efficiency.

In the five matches played, the World No. 1 has dropped just 17 games – moreover, Barty has won seven sets while losing not more than two games.

In the opening rounds, the 25-year-old Aussie knocked out Lesia Tsurenko and Lucia Bronzetti, followed by Camila Giorgi and Amanda Anisimova. In the quarterfinal, she dispatched Jessica Pegula with 6-2, 6-0 in just 63 minutes. That match saw her commit a surprising 22 unforced errors but made up for it with 17 winners to Pegula’s 7 and a phenomenal service game.

Fresh off a title run from Adelaide International 1, Barty couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. The reigning Wimbledon champion is already 9-0 this year, picking up right where she left off in 2021.

Last season, she retained her No. 1 ranking with a win rate of 84% on the tour (42-8) and courtesy of three big titles, including the Miami Open and Cincinnati Open.

However, in Keys, she will find a formidable opponent; an evenly matched rival whose style of play and service is bound to trouble the Australian.

Keys in First Major Semis since 2018

Madison Keys continued her comeback on the WTA Tour with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinal. She won 77% of her first service points and doled out 27 winners to see herself through to her first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2018 US Open.

Like Barty, Keys too has enjoyed a pretty good stint in Melbourne so far. In the opener, she knocked out the 2020 champion Sofia Kenin in straight sets, followed by victories against Jacqueline Cristian and Qiang Wang.

Although she stuttered a bit against Wang, Keys was quick to bounce back with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Paula Badosa.

In these five matches, the World No. 51 has struck a remarkable 35 aces – 15 of which came against Kenin and 11 against Krejcikova. That said, when compared to Barty, her unforced errors have been slightly on the higher end.

The 2017 US Open runner-up has a rich pedigree on the tour which spans across 11 WTA career finals – 10 of which are in the Premier tier or above. This year, she won the Adelaide International 2 – her first title since 2019 – to prepare for the Australian Open.

Barty v Keys Prediction and Tip

If there is a player who can defeat the seemingly unbeatable Barty at the moment, it is Keys. However, it will not be easy.

Barty is known for her impeccable shot placements and her ability to trouble her opponents. Keys, meanwhile, has a solid service game and a near-flawless powerful forehand. However, it’s this power that leads her to commit unforced errors as well.

If Keys can manage to keep the errors on the low side, she may just be able to do the impossible and reach the final. We are in for a brilliant game of tennis.
