Kwon Shows Fight in Melbourne
World No. 54 Soonwoo Kwon is coming off a gallant showing at the Australian Open. The South Korean, who had never won a match in his previous three Australian Open appearances, began this year’s Melbourne campaign with a tough five-set win over Denmark’s Holger Rune. He was brilliant in his second round match as well but went down fighting to Denis Shapovalov in a close to four-and-a-half-hour five-set contest.
Kwon, who will make his debut in Montpellier, hasn’t lost a first round match this year. Beginning his season in Adelaide-1, he defeated Yoshihito Nishioka but fell to Mikel Ymer in the second round.
In Adelaide-2, the South Korean rallied past Lloyd Harris in the opening round, but fell to Arthur Rinderknech in the Round of 16, despite taking the first set.
Kwon had an extremely successful 2021 season, clinching his maiden ATP title by beating James Duckworth in the final in Nur Sultan. He was also a semifinalist in Eastborune and reached the third round of the French Open during the 19-15 season.

Gaston Searching For Season’s First Win
Hugo Gaston is yet to win a match in 2022. The 21-year-old Frenchman threw away a one-set advantage in his opening-round loss to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in Sydney and then lost a four-set encounter against Australia’s Christopher O’Connell to remain winless at the Australian Open from two main draw appearances.
Ranked No. 67, the left-hander was also beaten by Sonego in his only main draw appearance at Montpellier last year.
But overall, Gaston had a very impressive run in 2021. The Frenchman reached a maiden ATP final in Gstaad, finishing runner-up to Casper Ruud and then impressed at the Paris Masters, coming through the qualifiers and making it to the last eight of the tournament.
He finished the year with a 9-9 record and will look to better that this season.
Kwon v Gaston Prediction and Tip
Having not won a match so far this year, Gaston will be under a bit of pressure. Kwon, meanwhile, has displayed good form. Expect the South Korean to advance into the next round.
