Roberto Bautista-Agut v Gilles Simon Head to Head

The pair have played each other seven times before, and Simon leads their head -to-head record with five wins to two.

He won their first two encounters at the Miami Masters in 2012 in Marseille the following year, before Bautista-Agut emerged victorious from their encounter in Monaco a few months later.

Three more Simon wins then ensued – in Tokyo in 2014, Paris in 2016, and Pune in 2018. However, it was the Spaniard who won their last meeting in Cologne two years ago.

2021 Finalist Bautista-Agut

Last year Bautista-Agut reached the final in Montpellier before losing to David Goffin of Belgium and the following month, was runner-up in the Qatar Open as well.

They proved to be high points in what was largely a disappointing season for the Spaniard, but 2022 seems to augur better based on results so far.

Representing his country at the ATP Cup in Australia, he won four out of his five singles matches and helped Spain reach the final, before finally losing to Canada.

And then at the Australian Open he beat Stefano Travaglia of Italy and then Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany before losing in five sets to Taylor Fritz of the USA, despite leading heading into the fourth set.

Having been given a bye in the first round here, this will be his first match since that loss.

Veteran Qualifier Simon

Simon is now at the veteran stage of a career which has seen him reach a career high ranking of six in the world and win 14 senior singles titles, the last of which was on home soil at the Moselle Open in 2018.

With age though, his powers, and his ranking have declined, and he was forced to qualify in Montpellier, organisers making the somewhat surprise decision not to award him a wildcard.

Marc-Andreas Huesler of Switzerland and compatriot Antoine Hoang were duly dispatched in straight sets, to earn himself a first round tie against another Frenchman, Lucas Pouille, the world number 156, who had been given a wildcard in preference to him.

Simon was the first to drop his set, but, getting the break back, the first set went to a tie-break which Simon eventually took.

However, it was Pouille who was the first to break in the second, , and although Simon then recovered it, he was not on level terms for long, and Pouille broke once more, as the match headed into a third set.

In the fifth game of that set, Simon had to save two break points and that proved crucial as he was offered a match point on the Pouille serve which he gratefully accepted.

Bautista-Agut v Simon Prediction and Tip

Despite Simon’s superior head to head record, the last of his wins was four years ago, and the two players are now at different stages of their careers. The Spaniard will begin this match as the heavy favourite.

Tip: Bautista-Agut to win in straight sets: 4/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
