Nikoloz Basilashvili’s winless drought in 2022 will extend into a fifth tournament. The Georgian is a jaw-dropping 0-5 since the start of the season, losing two matches at the ATP Cup and a further three first-round exits in each tournament thereafter.
His most recent defeat to World No. 152 Damir Dzumhur at the Montpellier Open has raised a few alarm bells. The 29-year-old is halfway towards matching his personal worst losing streak which stands at 10, set during the course of a tumultuous 2020 season.
So far his ranking has not been affected thanks in part to his bad run form at the same stage last season. However, Basilashvili will be defending a huge chunk of points at the start of March where he will put his title defense on the line at the Qatar Open.
His famine record of one win from three previous main draw appearances at the Rotterdam Open does not make for a pretty good reading. And his task of eradicating that form will get even harder when he opens up against Mackenzie McDonald.

McDonald Gets A Lucky Break
Mackenzie McDonald has suffered four defeats already this season, but you could point a finger at the horror draws he has received this season.
Aside from the two warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open, McDonald had a seemingly impossible mission to overcome Aslan Karatsev in the second round of the year’s first Grand Slam.
Then this past week in Montpellier, he was Alexander Zverev’s first opponent in Montpellier. Given how disappointing the German played out in Australia, it was only logical that the American would become easy prey for him.
And it turned out to be the case, although McDonald battled bravely in the second set, pushing Zverev into a tiebreak. Ultimately though, the German was a step ahead throughout the match.
McDonald, at least, did get a little bit of match practice in Montpellier under the roof and will be looking to record his fourth win of the season.
Basilashvili v McDonald Prediction and Tip
With Basilashvili you are not quite sure what you are going to get. On his day, the Georgian shot-maker is almost unplayable. But his current run of results does not bode well for his short-term future on the tennis court.
