Belinda Bencic v Kaja Juvan Head to Head

Belinda Bencic sensationally won the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but besides that, the Swiss tennis player has not enjoyed too much success. It’s been a while since she lifted a trophy and she would like to change that in St. Petersburg. She started off well in the first round surviving a thriller against Veronika Kudermetova.
She trailed 1-3 in the final set but was able to fight back and win it. For Bencic, it’s been hot and cold since the Olympics. In some events, she played brilliantly but in others, she simply loses easily. It’s been the story of her career so far with the lack of consistency really hurting her.
That is why her success at the Olympics surprised many. It was a rare display of consistency. In 2022 it’s been somewhat shaky. She lost to Paula Badosa in Sydney and Amanda Anisimova in Melbourne. Neither match was particularly close. Juvan presents a good chance for Bencic to move on but she will need to be consistent.

Qualifiers Proving Crucial for Juvan
Kaja Juvan had to play the qualifiers in St. Petersburg to reach the main draw and it proved quite useful for the Slovenian. She built up confidence and found her rhythm in those matches showing a very high level in the main draw. In the first round, she faced Alison Van Uytvanch and she came back from a set down in that match to win.
It showed a newfound resilience in Juvan that was not there before. There is talent within her game but she has not been able to unleash her full potential. Deep runs at events like these would help her but she will need to be consistent as she has been so far.
Bencic is an interesting matchup as Juvan defeated her last year at Wimbledon. She will fancy her chances here as well but the Swiss player showed a high level as well so it will be tricky.
Bencic v Juvan Prediction and Tip
On the surface, Bencic is the clear favourite to win this one. The Swiss player is a more competent player and has more experience yet Juvan present a tricky proposition for her. The Slovenian is feeling comfortable in these indoor conditions and her baseline game has been on point so far.
She will need all of that to defeat Bencic once more. The Swiss player nearly went out against Kudermetove in the first round but battled back to win. If Juvan allows Bencic a similar thing she might suffer the same fate. The only match they played indicates that Juvan can measure up against Bencic quite well.
Grass is a very different surface to hard but there are some similarities. If the Slovenian player forces Bencic on the defensive she will have a decent shot. I think she can keep it close but it won’t be enough to win the match. Back Bencic in 3 sets.
