Lorenzo Sonego v Laslo Djere Head to Head

Sonego and Djere played three times so far two of those matches played on clay. Sonego leads the H2H 2-1 having one both clay matches. Their latest one came last year in Cagliari and Sonego won that one in three sets.

Sonego Inches Away From Top 20

Lorenzo Sonego opened the year in solid fashion winning 7 matches and losing 4 which improved his ranking slowly. He is very close to entering the top 20 and establishing himself as one of the best players in the world but he will need a bit more of a push.

Sonego always had talent yet the consistency thing never fully clicked with him. He needs to find it in order to compete with the best but talent-wise he is there. Last week in Buenos Aires, Sonego reached the semifinal losing to Diego Schwartzman in a very close 3-set match.

In Rio, he will be looking to extend that solid run of form and potentially even looking for a title. It will start against Djere, a solid clay player who should be beatable for Sonego on most days. Can the Italian keep up the good form and secure the top 20? I think he can.

Djere Looking for Wins

Laslo Djere is a clay-court specialist that does rather well on the surface. His type of play and his forehand allow him to be a dangerous player on the surface and he lives for clay events. His draw was not so great here as he got Sonego early on and that’s a very tough matchup.

The Serbian’s form has not been great this year having won only two matches and lost three. Djere faced Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the Australian Open and lost easily. His next match came last week in Buenos Aires but he drew Kecmanovic who proved slightly better in a tight 3-setter.

Against Sonego he will need to be really sharp to be able to win. Can he do it? Absolutely. Will he? I don’t think so. Sonego looks too solid right now and his confidence should be higher after a solid showing in Buenos Aires.

Sonego v Djere Prediction and Tip

As a matchup that has seen matches before this one should be easier to call than most. Sonego leads it 2-1 having one both matches on clay. THat paints a rather clear picture because Sonego is the better player overall but also the better player on Djere’s favourite surface of clay.

The Italian has the bigger game (better serve and better forehand) but he can be erratic and unstable at times. It’s been less and less of that recently so the consistency issues seem to be resolving with maturity and it shows on the results and the rankings.

Sonego is inches away from entering the top 20 and a solid run here could seal that deal. I think he will be motivated to do so and I don’t think fatigue should be a huge issue. It’s clay so anything could happen but I think Sonego will get the job done.
