Diego Schwartzman v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

14th-ranked Schwartzman has not played 62nd-ranked Martinez before this.

Schwartzman Loses To Ruud In Buenos Aires Final

Diego Schwartzman’s title reign in Buenos Aires is over. That was after the diminutive Argentine lost in the final on home soil to the returning Casper Ruud.

The Norwegian had been out of action shortly after the ATP Cup due to an ankle injury. And despite going down a set to the local favorite Schwartzman, Ruud proved to be the ATP 250s man of the moment once again.

Defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for Schwartzman, who had ended a 13-year wait for a home champion at last year’s edition of the Argentina Open.

Nonetheless, it has been a productive fortnight in South America for Schwartzman. The 29-year-old has rediscovered his winning touch after that shocking second-round exit at the Australian Open to Christopher O’Connell.

Schwartzman received a first-round bye in Rio where he is a former champion. But he will play his first match since 2019 when he takes on Pedro Martinez.

Martinez Too Strong For Debutant Juncheng

Pedro Martinez held off a spirited charge by Shang Juncheng – the Chinese wildcard who was looking to mark his ATP main draw debut with a win.

Juncheng came to Rio with a strong reputation as one of the fastest-rising Chinese stars of his generation. He is only 17, but has reached the no.1 ranking on the junior circuit. He also finished runner-up in the US Open juniors tournament last year.

But Juncheng had a difficult introduction to life on the ATP tour against a seasoned clay court campaigner in Martinez. The Spaniard hardly needed to move through the gears but did save three break points on his serve in the contest.

Martinez would convert a break point of his own on either side of the sets, and won 74% first-serve points. He is also on doubles duty this week alongside countryman Pablo Andujar, where the pair of them won their Round of 16 match on Tuesday.

Schwartzman v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman looks to have summoned the moxie that seemed to elude him at times in Australia. A change of continent and surface has been a welcome transition. Expect the No. 3 seed to return to winning ways on Wednesday.
