Aslan Karatsev v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

World No. 15 Aslan Karatsev has yet to play Benjamin Bonzi at any level before this.

Karatsev Snaps Three-Match Losing Streak

It was turning into a mini-crisis of some sort for Aslan Karatsev until he managed to snap his three-match losing streak against Holger Rune in the Round of 16 of the Marseille Open on Wednesday.

Karatsev’s Australian Open third-round exit came as a shock, almost reminiscent of his very own breakthrough at the same Major 12 months ago. This explains why he is making his main draw debut at the ATP 250 event in the south of France in an effort to salvage a few points before next week’s title defense at the Dubai Championships.

And the Russian power-hitting machine came through a nervy opening game in which he saved a break point to hold. He did settle in the contest from that moment on, although he needed to stave off two more break points before making his move.

Karatsev produced a punchy return of serve that forced Rune to mishit and enabled him to nudge ahead for a 5-3 lead. The Russian comfortably held in his next game to win the first set.

The second set went into a tiebreak after Karatsev was foiled in his attempt to serve for the match. The Russian overcame a few jitters in the breaker and breathed a sigh of relief when Rune’s final backhand slice hit the net.

Bonzi Makes Maiden Tour-Level Quarterfinal

Benjamin Bonzi made it seven wins in a row with victory over compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Bonzi, who only last week captured the Cherbourg Challenger, has backed up that success with two solid wins in Marseille to reach his first ATP quarterfinal.

The Frenchman was one of the most successful players on the ATP Challenger Tour in the past 12 months and continues to be a class above the rest at that level.

And Bonzi is steadily making his mark on the ATP stage. Having defeated Kamil Majchrzak in the first round, Bonzi needed 87 minutes to overcome Herbert in a match that was largely dominated by serve. The ninth seed slammed down five aces and won 83% first-serve points, nullifying a couple of break points on his serve.

Bonzi would only need to break his countryman once in each set to round off a 6-4 6-3 win. It would be a career highlight should the World No. 69 secure his first Top 20 win of his career on Friday.

Karatsev v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

The shackles have come off as far as Karatsev is concerned, but I doubt he will have the freedom to dictate his quarterfinal match against Bonzi. The Frenchman is no pushover and is due for his main tour breakthrough after reaching his first quarterfinal on the ATP tour.
