Paula Badosa v Clara Tauson Head to Head

Tauson leads Badosa 1-0, last beating the Spaniard in the Lyon Open semifinal last season en route to her maiden WTA title.

Badosa, on a Career-High at No. 4

World No. 4 Paula Badosa has had a brilliant start to the new season. A title in Sydney International and a fourth-round sprint in the Australian Open have propelled her into the top five.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a great spell on the hard courts in the land down under, having racked up wins over Jelena Ostapenko, Belinda Bencic, and Barbora Krejcikova.

Interestingly, in her last event in Dubai, she was stunned in the opening round by the #59 Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Badosa certainly seems a bit wobbly, giving Tauson a good opening to make life difficult for her.

That said, Badosa’s overall pedigree implies that she is one of the most consistent players on the tour. She concluded 2021 with a tally of 43-17 and nine quarterfinal-or-better results. With a litany of top 10 wins already under her belt, she has established herself as a formidable opponent.

Tauson Scalps Bencic

Clara Tauson was handed a tricky opener in Doha in the form of Belinda Bencic. The 19-year-old, however, rose to the challenge and stunned the Swiss with 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in a little under two hours.

Now ranked World No. 33, Tauson continues to build on her breakthrough season from 2021 that saw her jump some 100 places in the ranking. The Danish took home two ITF titles, two WTA titles, and one Challenger trophy in what was certainly a remarkable year.

Her heroics so far haven’t been that great but she can be excused, given her lack of experience. What’s impressive is despite being a rising star, she is thriving quite handsomely. In Melbourne 2 and later the Slam, she reached the third round (defeating Anett Kontaveit in the latter).

Tauson’s Dubai campaign wasn’t eventful either as she fell in the final qualifying round.

Badosa v Tauson Prediction and Tip

This will be an entertaining affair that can very well swing either way. Tauson is no stranger to competing at this level of tennis while Badosa, for all her momentum, is a tad bit rusty at the moment. Even then, the number three seed is starting as the odds-on favourite.
