Jannik Sinner v Andy Murray Head to Head

Andy Murray stunned Jannik Sinner in a Round of 16 match at the Stockholm Open last fall. That remains their only tour-level meeting before this.

Sinner Survives Davidovich Fokina Scare

Jannik Sinner doesn’t always get emotional after a match win, but even the coolest kid in Dubai showed his second face. Sinner let out a huge ‘Come On’ when Alejandro Davidovich Fokina chased his powerful forehand in the empty court, bringing the shutters down in a thrilling match on Tuesday.

Sinner had to battle a spirited opponent and saved three match points in a dramatic second set tiebreak, before prevailing 4-6 7-6 6-3 in just over two and half hours. Considering this was the Italian’s first match back since the Australian Open, it didn’t matter how he won.

The fourth-seeded Italian reacted superbly from going a set and a break down to level the match. He trailed Davidovich Fokina 3-6 in the second set tiebreaker before he pulled off an improbable comeback.

Sinner bossed the third set, displaying an array of trick shots and exceptional hitting from the baseline. And when he broke the Spaniard in the sixth game of the decider, it was clear Davidovich Fokina had run his course after that disappointment of failing to close out the match.

Murray Fights Back To Deny O’Connell

Andy Murray’s Middle-Eastern swing was treading a thin line towards disaster, but the Briton managed to fight back from a perilous position to reach the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Murray, who last week suffered one of the most humiliating defeats of his career in Doha at the hands of Bautista Agut, wasn’t going to leave Dubai on a whimper.

The former World No. 1 recovered from losing the first set to defeat Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell 6-7 6-3 7-5. The match lasted two hours and 51 minutes, one of Murray’s longest matches this season.

Murray’s serve improved markedly from a terrible first set. Having landed just 44% first serves in the opener, that figure rose to 58% by the end of the contest. And if he stands a chance of defeating Sinner for the second time in their series, he will need his serve to hit all the right spots from the off. Can the former champion upstage the upstart?

Sinner v Murray Prediction and Tip

It looks like Murray will need to stick around for some time to improve his current ranking of 89 in order to avoid these tough draws in earlier rounds. Murray’s wins have also come at the expense of subjecting his surgically-repaired hips to even more torture. That is unlikely to help his cause against a fit athlete in Sinner.
