Sorana Cirstea v Stefanie Voegele Head to Head

Cirstea leads 4-1 from their five previous matches, but they haven’t met since 2014.

Cirstea Breezes Past Bolkvadze

Second seed Sorana Cirstea began her Lyon campaign with a routine win over Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze, who double faulted 17 times during the match.

The Romanian converted 6 of 17 break points and saved 3 of 5 to beat the qualifier 6-3, 6-1.

Cirstea, who won the title in Istanbul and finished runner-up in Strasbourg last year, improved to 7-5 for the season. She had a pretty god run at the Australian Open, beating the 20th seed Petra Kvitova and the 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova en route the Round of 16, but couldn’t progress further after suffering a tough three-set loss to Iga Swiatek.

The 31-year-old lost her first round match in Lyon on debut last year. She has made just one first round exit this year in Adelaide. In the three other WTA Tour events this year in Melbourne, St. Petersburg and Doha, she won her opening round match but lost in the second round. Can she reach a first quarterfinals of the season?

Voegele Rallies Past Jacquemot

World No. 144 Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland overturned a one-set deficit to edge out France’s Elsa Jacquemot and register her first main draw victory of the season.

Voegele, who was beaten in the first rounds of the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, had begun the match well, taking a 0-3 lead in the first set, but the Frenchwoman broke the Swiss player twice to take the first set. Voegele bounced back by comfortably taking the second set with three breaks of serve but had to sweat it out in the third. Both players broke each other twice in the first five games of the third, before the Swiss had her nose in front again in the eighth game. She held on to the lead for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Voegele had qualified for the main draw with a 6-4, 6-1 thrashing of Spain’s Georgina García Pérez in the first qualifying round and a 6-3, 7-5 win over Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze.

Voegele had also won both her qualifying rounds in Qatar but had lost in the first round to Kaja Juvan.
