Leylah Annie Fernandez has had a muted start to the new season. Since reaching the final in the US Open last season – beating the likes of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka – the Canadian is yet to deliver a similar run.
The number two seed has featured in just two tournaments this season – Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open. In both cases, Fernandez was beaten in the early rounds respectively by Iga Swiatek and Maddison Inglis.
Here in Monterrey, where she is the defending champion, the current world number 22 started with a straight-set win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Fernandez needed just an hour and 10 minutes to seal the win with 6-2, 6-2.
That said, she is low on momentum whereas her opponent has had a stellar start to the year.

Zheng, Making Waves
Roughly a year ago, 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng was ranking in the mid 200s. She is now World No. 77 and looks primed to go even further.
Her tally for the new season is already at an impressive 14-3 which includes her maiden WTA semifinal run in Melbourne 1, a second-round stint in the Australian Open as a qualifier, and an ITF title feat in Orlando.
However, she did lose in the first round in WTA Guadalajara last week to Anna Kalinskaya in three sets. Nonetheless, Zheng has been superbly consistent in 2022 and looks like a difficult player to subdue.
So far in her career, she has won every single ITF final she ever made it to and is now 8-0.
Fernandez v Zheng Prediction and Tip
Fernandez has a comparatively superior pedigree but her lack of form may just give Zheng the necessary ammunition needed to win this one.
This should prove to be an entertaining affair.
