Former world number one and multiple Grand Slam winner Serena Williams has welcomed the birth of her first child.
Williams, who is a 23-time winner in Grand Slam competitions, gave birth to her newborn girl at the St. Mary’s Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday. The baby weighs six pounds, 13 ounces.

The American was a few weeks pregnant when she won the 2017 Australian Open and later revealed a photo of her and a baby bump via a Snapchat post.
Having missed tennis action since winning that Australian Open – including the ongoing US Open – Williams has dropped to number 15th in the world. She is expected to return to competitive tennis at the 2018 Australian Open.
Fiance Alexis Ohanian, who is a co-founder of Reddit, has also decided to a few weeks of paternity leave. He had earlier tweeted a picture of Serena Williams when she had appeared in the Vogue magazine:

The entire tennis fraternity congratulated Williams on the occasion, with some taking to Twitter to wish her well.

Serena’s sister Venus Williams is currently featuring in the US Open, having reached the fourth round of the competition.
