It’s been bit of a mixed bag for Thompson this year with one solid showing, two middling performances and a couple of opening round defeats to show for his effort.
One of those first round losses came at the last tournament he featured in, at Delray Beach, where Thompson was bundled out by Mitchell Krueger 6-2, 6-4. Before that, however, he did show some spark when he managed to get past the much-favoured Brandon Nakashima in Dallas.
Starting out at 5/2 odds to overcome Nakashima, Thompson came through in two, hard-fought sets to make it to the last eight.
Before that, he had a couple of second round appearances at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 and Sydney International. The Aussie will hope he can get moving in this one against a player who has shown equal amounts of struggles.

Goffin on a Four-Match Losing Streak
It’s been anything but a pleasant time on tour for Goffin recently and that can be seen from his showing this year as well.
Other than a quarterfinal appearance at Sydney International where he won a couple of rounds, Goffin has won one and lost seven matches. Four of those seven have been in succession and it was only his victories at the Davis Cup last week that stalled that run.
What is surprising is Goffin’s slide from being ranked seventh in the world to his current 71st has almost come without warning.
Goffin will need to break his four-match losing streak to get himself some kind of a groove for the rest of the season.

Goffin starts off as a big of a favourite but don’t discount Thompson out of this, and we could see the Aussie edging past the opponent.
