Jenson Brooksby v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

It will be their first tour-level meeting, however Brooksby won a qualifying round at the Paris Masters last year.

Brooksby Will Look to Make a Deep Run

He was ranked 252nd in the world at this time last year, but following an extraordinary summer in the U.S., the 21-year-old is fast climbing the rankings and will be one of the players to watch at Indian Wells.

Brooksby, who reached his first career final in Newport last year and was a semifinalist in Washington and Antwerp, has been impressive this season as well and has already featured in a final.

Playing his first tournament of the season in Dallas last month, Brooksby reached the second final of his career by defeating Andreas Seppi, Jordan Thompson and Marcos Giron but was denied a maiden title by Reilly Opelka.

In Acapulco, Brooksby started well taking the first set against Alexander Zverev but the German fought back to knock out the American in the first round.

This will be Brooksby’s third tour-level tournament this year. He also featured in one Challenger event, losing in the semifinals in Columbus. Last year he had won three Challenger titles from four finals.

Carballes Baena Is 2-6 This Year

Roberto Carballes Baena is a clay court specialist and just finished runner-up at a Challenger tournament in Spain.

He is 2-6 in the main draws this year, with both wins coming on clay in Cordoba and Buenos Aires. The World No. 73 doesn’t have a great record in Indian Wells either, having won 2 and lost 2 in his previous two appearances. So he will find the going tough in the first round against the fast-improving Brooksby.

While the 28-year-old did well at the Challenger level last year, particularly on clay courts, he struggled to at the tour level and an 11-16 record is a testament of that.

Can Carballes Baena pull off a surprise in the first round? Seems highly unlikely.

Brooksby v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip
