Steve Johnson v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head

It’s not been the kind of a season start that Johnson would have preferred, and he has already fallen outside the top 100 after having been 84th at one stage.
The 115th-ranked Johnson is also coming off back to back defeats to Stefan Kozlov, both in straight sets and in the second round at Delray Beach and at the Acapulco Open qualifiers.
Before that, a first round loss at Dallas and second round appearances in Adelaide 1 and 2 and at the Australian Open have punctuated Johnson’s season so far.
The good news for Johnson is he had been knocked out in the first round of this tournament last season too. With no pressure of defending any points, he would be looking to make it to the second round and that should help him improve his ranking too.
That said, what Johnson needs is a run of wins that assists him in breaking into the top 100 and beyond – can he start that momentum off here?

Altmaier at His Career Best
23-year-old Altmaier is in the early stages of his career and ranked 79th in the world at the moment, he will be happy to know it’s his career-best.
That also allowed him a direct qualification into this competition much like the last season when he was playing at the Indian Wells Masters for the first time. Altmaier had made it to the second round then, defeating another American Sam Querrey in his opener.
This year, Altmaier has won main draw matches in only one of the seven tournaments he has played though, making his form a bit of a suspect.
That came at the Pune Open where he reached the quarterfinal, but in the three competitions before and after that including the Acapulco Open just before this, Altmaier has lost his openers.
