Van de Zandschulp Into His Second ATP 1000 Main Draw
Botic van de Zandschulp brings a 7-5 season record to the tournament. The 26-year-old Dutchman, who made the U.S. Open quarterfinals on debut last year, has made a steady progress over the last one year.
He was not even a top 150 player at the start of 2021, but climbed up the rankings consistently, breaking into the top 100 in August. He is currently at a career-high ranking of 47, having achieved that earlier this week.
This year, Van de Zandschulp’s best performance came at the ATP 250 in Melbourne, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Grigor Dimitrov. He also won two matches at the Australian Open, but was outclassed by Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 32. Most recently, he featured at the Davis Cup against Canada, winning his singles rubber against Alexis Galarneau.
Van de Zandschulp has made just one main draw appearance at an ATP 1000 tournament and that was at the Indian Wells Open last year, where he lost to Marcos Giron in the first round after coming through the qualifiers.

Sandgren Edges Out Millman to Qualify
Tennys Sandgren has played just two ATP tournaments this year and is yet to win a match. He lost the opening round matches in both Dallas Open and the Delray Beach Open to Marcos Giron.
Ranked 153, Sandgren looked good in the qualifiers this week, eking out two hard-fought come-from-behind victories to reach the main draw.
The 30-year-old American defeated fellow countryman Bjorn Fratangelo 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then knocked out top seed John Millman of Australia 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) in a two-hour-and-57-minute second qualifying round on Thursday.
Sandgren is 2-3 at Indian Wells and was 8-16 from tour-level events last year.
It will be interesting to see if the former top 50 player can get his first main draw win of the season and start his move up the rankings again.
Van de Zandschulp v Sandgren Prediction and Tip
Van de Zandschulp has played more this year and is the player in better form. Sandgren is also coming off two draining qualifying contests. He will challenge, but expect the Dutchman to move into the second round.
