Carlos Alcaraz v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Alcaraz and McDonald have not played each other before this.

Alcaraz Breaks World’s Top 20

At this rate, it won’t be long before Carlos Alcaraz reached the top of the food chain. The 18-year-old Spaniard checked off another milestone in his embryonic tennis career by lifting the Rio Open title.

Exactly two years on from his first ATP match win in Rio, Alcaraz won his second ATP title in Brazil’s seaside city last month, beating the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Fabio Fognini, and Diego Schwartzman. That trio has been (or is, in the case of Berrettini) ranked inside the world’s top 10 before.

The Spaniard has been on a terrier this year, going 8-1 in the first couple of months. The only blot in his copybook was the epic third-round defeat to Berrettini at the Australian Open in which he fought back from two sets down before losing in five.

Following this mesmeric run of form, Alcaraz has been handsomely rewarded with a place inside the world’s Top 20 for the first time.

What makes this achievement even more special is that none of the Big 3 broke into the elite group at a younger age than Alcaraz who did so at 18 years and nine months old. The only player who comes close to that record is Alcaraz’s childhood idol and countryman Rafael Nadal, who did so at 18 years and 10 months.

McDonald Edges Fucsovics

The unseeded Mackenzie McDonald played in the first round of Indian Wells, beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.

McDonald arrived at the BNP Paribas Open on the back of a first Top 20 win of the season (defeated Aslan Karatsev) in Dubai and a quarterfinal finish at the same tournament. But he was tested by Fuscosivs in an entertaining opening-round match on Stadium 1.

McDonald trailed in the first-set tiebreak 4-1, but raised his game to restore order at 6-6. But the drama went to the wire as the American managed to come out on top 13-11 in the breaker.

And in the second set, things were similar to the first. Both players played clinically behind their first serves, until in game 12 when Fucsovoics was broken while serving to stay in the match.

Alcaraz v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz’s transformation has been meteoric, to say the least. As efficient as McDonald plays on hard courts, I can’t see him troubling the Spaniard on the slow Indian Wells turf.

Tip: Alcaraz to win in straight sets: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
