Nikoloz Basilashvili v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Fognini defeated Basilashili in the pair’s only meeting at the 2021 Cincinatti Masters last season.

Basilashvili Looks To Emulate Last Season’s Heroics

None of us expected things to go in such a frenzy in last year’s Indian Wells tournament. A final between Cameron Norrie and Nikoloz Basilashvili was the least of many people’s pre-tournament predictions, but it materialized.

Basilashvili started his 2022 campaign with six straight defeats before he stopped the rot at the Qatar Open. And for the second successive year, he reached another final in Doha, but could not complete the double act in a rematch of last year’s final against Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Georgian was back to his old habits again, losing routinely to Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, extending his appalling record for the season to 3-8.

2021 began on a somber note for Basilashvili before he managed to turn things around. He won two titles and re-entered the Top 20. So, despite this alarming return of form, we should not be quick to write him off just yet.

Fognini Makes Italian History

Fabio Fognini made history after beating Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar 3-6 6-3 6-3 on Thursday. The victory ensured Fognini’s place in the second round of Indian Wells is secured, and more importantly passed former world No. 4, Adriano Panatta, for the most match wins of an Italian male player.

Fognini was unsure of the record in hand before he took to the court, but could not conceal his happiness after steering clear of his childhood idol Panatta, following an unlikely comeback win over Andujar.

The Spaniard had a bad start to the afternoon, dropping serve in the opening game. But as fate would have it, Fognini would end the set on a whimper, ceding a couple of his own service games to lose the opener 6-3 in 54 minutes.

But in the second set, Fognini ensured there would be no such recurrence as he romped to take a 4-1 lead, saving a pair of two break points in the fifth game before closing it out 6-3. And the decider stayed on serve for a few games, before Fognini made his move again, breaking serve twice to round off a memorable win.

Fognini v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili reached the finals of this tournament last season, but he appears to be lacking in enthusiasm and motivation. Fognini’s headspace could determine the outcome of this match, but if he plays with verve and swagger in his game, he should be able to overcome the inconsistent Georgian.
