Elise Mertens v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Marta Kostyuk had to work hard to earn her first-round win in the Indian Wells Open, as she took on the former Ukrainian Maryna Zanveska. The match lasted for a little over three hours and saw Kostyuk win with 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-5.
Amidst the troubles in her homeland, one can only imagine the mental resilience Kostyuk has to see herself through these tournaments.
Even though the 19-year-old Kostyuk has lost in the early rounds this season, there are plenty of positives to go about. For one, she cracked the top 50 (albeit for a short time) to reach her career-best ranking. At the moment, she is ranked #54.
Secondly, she reached the third round at the Australian Open upsetting Diane Parry and Sara Sorribes Tormo en route. Kostyuk followed it with qualifying wins in Dubai and Doha to reach the main draw but unfortunately, she lost in the first round.
Kostyuk has been working hard on the tour and even though she lacks experience, she is a worthy opponent. Last year, she reached the semifinal in Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, and Cluj-Napoca and the fourth-round in the French Open.

Mertens, Looking Confident
Number 20 seed Elise Mertens is starting in the valley with a bye into the second round. She has had an average run in 2022 so far; the Belgian reached the round of 16 in the Australian Open and Qatar Open, and the quarterfinal in St. Petersburg.
On the doubles circuit, she won the title in Dubai and was a finalist in Doha with Veronika Kudermetova.
Mertens has clearly got some momentum under her belt and will be optimistic about her prospects of a decent run in the competition. However, she lost in the Indian Wells as recently as in October last year to Jasmine Paolini in the opener.
The 26-year-old may be the current world number 23 but she is not entirely immune to defeats from the underdogs.
Mertens v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip
Kostyuk will bring her best foot forward for this fixture and make things as difficult as she can for Mertens, who will start as the favourite. Whether she can win is an entirely different story but we are very well in store for an entertaining match.
