Badosa Eases Into Round Three

Defending champion Paula Badosa defeated Czech Republic’s Terezza Martincova for the first time in their fourth meeting to get her 2022 Indian Wells campaign off to a great start.

Having lost the previous three meetings across levels, the 24-year-old Spaniard would have been a bit jittery before the start of the match, but she came out all guns blazing, racing to a 4-0 lead and taking the first set with ease.

Martincova got an early break in the second to go up 0-2, but the Spaniard immediately broke back to stay on serve. Both players held serve for the rest of the set, before the fifth seed took charge of the tiebreak to seal a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Last year, Badosa won the title on her main draw debut, defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final to claim her first WTA 1000 title.

The aggressive right-hander had also claimed the Belgrade Open last year, which was her first career title and this year she made it 3-0 in the finals by winning the Sydney International trophy. Badosa ousted Barbora Krejcikova to kickstart the season with a title.

Sorribes Tormo Rallies Past Juvan

Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo showed nerves of steel as she rallied past Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan on Saturday.

Juvan got the only break of the first set to take a one-set lead but Sorribes Tormo fought back in the second. The Spaniard got a break to lead 4-2, but couldn’t serve out the set at 5-3, with Juvan getting the break back. Sorribes Tormo applied pressure in the later half of the set and eventually converted a fourth set point in the 12th game to force the decider.

With the momentum shifted, the Spaniard raced to a 3-0 lead but the Slovenian came back, winning the next three. But Sorribes Tormo seized the control back, taking the next three games and the contest 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The 25-year-old Spaniard, who won her first title in Guadalajara last year, is coming off back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in Guadalajara and Monterrey. This is the best Indian Wells campaign for her so far, can she go further?
