Sakkari Off to a Brisk Start
World No. 6 Maria Sakkari has been in brilliant form this year, particularly over the last two tournament, and she looks set for another deep run in Indian Wells after a solid second round win on Saturday.
The sixth seed Greek needed an hour and 36 minutes to beat the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 7-5. Sakkari took the first set with ease, but found some resistance from the World No. 55 in the second set, as Siniakova broke back twice to keep he chances alive. But eventually it was Sakkari who won the last three games in a row to advance.
Semifinalist at the French and the U.S. Opens last year, Sakkari improved to 12-4 this year. She was a finalist in St. Petersburg, but finished runner-up to Annett Kontaveit. The 26-year-old followed it up with a run to the semifinals in Qatar but was denied a chance to reach consecutive finals after she went down to Iga Swiatek.

Kvitova Holds off Sasnovich
No. 27 seed Petra Kvitova is having a tough time this season, but she safely passed the first test at Indian Wells, overcoming a one-set deficit to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round on Saturday.
In a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes, Kvitova saved five of eight break points and converted half of the 10 break points that she held to hold off Sasnovich 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4.
With the win, the 32-year-old lefty improved to 6-6 for the season. She has reached just one quarterfinal this year, in Dubai, and has struggled to win two matches in a row in the other tournaments.
The two-time major winner is yet to reach a semifinal at Indian Wells, having fallen in the quarters twice. Could it be this year? She has struggled a bit this season and faces an in-form opponent in the third round. So the prospect of her going deep seems low.
Sakkari v Kvitova Prediction and Tip
Having got into a good rhythm early in the season, Sakkari will back herself to progress into the next round. The two have been involved in a few close contests previously. Expect this to go the distance as well with the Greek advancing.
