There were a handful of upsets in the past couple of days at Indian Wells, but Madison Keys avoided that procession towards a second-round exit against Misaki Doi.
The power-hitting American was on a roll during the Australian summer, winning her sixth career title in Adelaide before going on to make the semifinals of the Australian Open. But a loss to Ashleigh Barty kickstarted a mini-crisis that saw Keys lose three matches on the spin.
Her last two defeats were damaging, to say the least. And when you take a look at the American’s record at Indian Wells (scaled the second round twice in eight main draw appearances), there was a reason why backing Doi to spring an upset did not seem fanciful.
Some bold hitting gave Keys the platform to go on and snap her losing streak. She won a tight first set 6-4, but her level dropped considerably, giving her Japanese opponent a route back into the contest.
Doi obliged, taking the second set 6-3, coming back from a break deficit. However, in the third set, the World No. 29 played with verve and swagger, winning 80% first-serve points and not facing a single break point.

Riske Authors Muguruza Upset
Alison Riske was not expected to pose much of her a challenge against the 2021 WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza. But Riske seems to be enjoying the matchup against the Spaniard, proving her 2019 US Open was no fluke.
Riske took all the risks in the world to master the World No. 9 for the third time, and now leads their head-to-head 3-2.
The American World No. 53 fought back from a position of near-destruction, having lost the first set 6-0, before pulling off the upset of the day.
Riske won 12 of the last 13 games of the match, which is quite ridiculous, as Muguruza wilted. That victory was her 10th Top 10 win of her career.
Riske is now in the third round of the Indian Wells tournament for the first time in eight main draw attempts. Can she conquer Madison Keys for the second time in nine meetings?
Keys v Riske Prediction and Tip
Their head-to-head record does not make for pretty good reading if you’re an Alison Riske fan. Add to the fact that Keys dropped just three games in their 2022 Adelaide final, and you start to worry for the unseeded American in this clash.
