Maria Sakkari v Daria Saville Head to Head

Saville leads 1-0, last upsetting the Greek in 2016 San Antonio in three sets.

Business as Usual for Sakkari

Number six seed Maria Sakkari has made easy work of her opponents in the BNP Paribas Open. In the opener, she dismissed Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 7-5 while in the third round, she knocked out Petra Kvitova with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Her build-up for Tennis Paradise was just as impressive; Sakkari reached the final in St. Petersburg Trophy (losing to Anett Kontaveit) and was also one of the elite four later in the Doha Open.

This marks an uptick n momentum for the Greek, who started the year with back to back round of 16 appearances in Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open. On the back of these results, Sakkari became World No. 6 and looks primed to go further.

Saville, Getting Back to her Winning Ways

Former World No. 20 Daria Saville is slowly finding her path back to her glory days when she was a consistent player on the tour.

In the last few seasons, the Australian hasn’t played that much tennis; in 2021 alone, Saville played in only three tournaments – Yarra Valley Classic, Australian Open, and the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

As a result, the 28-year-old is now ranking in the early 400s as she looks to build her form further. So far in 2022, her best result came in Guadalajara when she reached the quarterfinal.

At the valley, Gavrilova had consistently reached the third round in her last three appearances here. This season she has gone further – in an impeccable fashion.

Starting as a qualifier, Saville had to first overcome Kamilla Rakhimova and Magdalena Frech. Then in the opening rounds, she moved past some big names like Shuai Zhang, Ons Jabeur, and Elise Mertens.

Sakkari v Saville Prediction and Tip

It is fair to say that Sakkari is an entirely different league when compared to the likes of Mertens and Jabeur. Therefore, Saville will need to bring her best game forward to continue her winning run – something that seems unlikely at the moment.

After all, the Greek has momentum, form, and a fair bit of confidence on her side. Expect Sakkari to win this one comfortably.
