Paula Badosa v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Badosa who defeated the Canadian teenager in the 2020 WTA Auckland qualifiers.

Fernandez, in a Fine Form

World No. 21 Leylah Annie Fernandez has played some decent tennis over the last week at Indian Wells.

After a rocky start to the season (early exits in Adelaide and Melbourne), the 19-year-old picked up the pace and successfully defended her title in the Monterrey Open. That served as a good practice run for the WTA 1000 event in Cali where she reached the fourth round last time around.

Having made it to the same stage this edition, Fernandez will hope to go further.

Her campaign so far has been a tricky one; in the opener, she survived Amanda Anisimova after the American withdrew at the start of the deciding set with 2-6, 7-6(0). Next, the number 18 seed knocked out Shelby Rogers (who had just defeated the in-form Latvian Jelena Ostapenko) with 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Since reaching the final at the US Open last season, Fernandez has continued to grow and improve her game. She is already defeating more experienced players and against someone like Badosa, she will be optimistic about her prospects.

Badosa, Yet to Drop a Set

Defending champion, the number five seed Paula Badosa has commenced her title defence in style. She is yet to drop a set as she made easy work of Tereza Martincova and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

In her last couple of events, the 24-year-old Spaniard was seen struggling which, in turn, cast doubts over her prospects in Tennis Paradise. In Doha, she fell in the third round in straight sets to Cori Gauf while in Dubai before that, Badosa was stunned into submission by Elena-Gabriela Ruse in round one.

That said, the current world number seven did start the season on a winning note with a title run in Sydney Classic and a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open.

Badosa rose to prominence last year when she won the Belgrade Open, Indian Wells Open, and reached the penultimate rounds in a handful of few big events.

Badosa v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

The Spaniard will start as the odds-on favourite but Fernandez is ready to put up a solid fight. Badosa has seen her fair share of upsets of late, thus setting the precedent for the Canadian.

This may very well stretch to three sets before we see a winner.
