Berrettini Holds Off Harris

Matteo Berrettini moved into the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters for the first time in his fourth try. The sixth seed Italian had a bit of a struggle midway during his third round contest, but he was able to steady the ship and close out the match in straight sets to hand South Africa’s Lloyd Harris his seventh defeat in nine matches this year.

The World No. 6 out-aced Harris 12-6 and had a total of 22 winners against the South African’s 15. He also made 10 fewer unforced errors than Harris’ 24.

Berrettini wasn’t troubled in the fist set, as he got the only break of the set in the ninth game before closing it out. He saw a dip in form in the second as Harris got a break in the fourth game and then held three set points, two on Berrettini’s serve in the eighth game and one on his in the ninth.

Lifting his game, the Italian not only saved all the set points but also broke the World no. 32 twice to wrap up the match in straight sets. The 6-4, 7-5 win came in an hour and 35 minutes.

In the second round, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist was stretched to three sets by Danish qualifier Holger Rune, but the Italian survived the scare with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

One of the most consistent performers in Grand Slam tennis over the last four majors, Berrettini has now improved to 9-5 for the season. On Wednesday, he will be hoping to reach a fourth Masters 1000 quarterfinals.

Kecmanovic Ekes Out Another Solid Win

Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic continued to build on a solid season as he got a third win at the Indian Wells Masters on Tuesday to move into the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the second time in his career.

The World No. 61, who was a quarterfinalist at Indian Wells in 2019, needed an and 48 minutes to dispatch the Netherland’s Botic Van de Zandschulp 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. The Serbian hit just 22 winners compared to the Dutchman’s 32 but made only 15 unforced errors against Van de Zandschulp’s 35.

Both players served well in the first set, with neither getting broken and forcing the tiebreak, which Kecmanovic dominated. In the second, it was Kecmanovic who got two breaks of serve against the Dutchman’s lone break in the eighth game to advance to the next round.

The Serbian is coming off back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in Rio and Santiago and also had a fourth-round finish in the Australian Open.

The win over the 47th ranked Van de Zandschulp was his second against a higher-ranked player in Indian Wells. On Monday, he had stunned the 24th seed Marin Cilic 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). He also needed three sets to beat Britain’s Liam Broady 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round of the tournament.

Berrettini v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

Given Kecmanovic’s form, Berrettini won’t take him lightly, but the sixth seed should still win and reach a first quarterfinal at Indian Wells.
