Paula Badosa v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

Badosa leads 1-0 with her sole win over Sakkari coming in the WTA Finals 2021 last season with 7-6(4), 6-4.

Sakkari in her Third Straight Semis

World No. 6 Maria Sakkari is set to play in her third consecutive semifinal this season; she has made it to the final four in five of her last seven events on the WTA Tour.

Although she has reached the final only once (St. Petersburg Open, loss to Anett Kontaveit) in these, her consistency and ability to deliver these impressive results is an impressive feat in itself. If anything, this has become routine for Sakkari who reached the semis in four big events last year – French Open, US Open, Miami Open, and the WTA Finals.

Sakkari has continued in the same vein at the BNP Paribas Open – without dropping a single set. The 26-year-old had dispatched the likes of Katerina Siniakova (6-3, 7-5), Petra Kvitova (6-3, 6-0), Daria Saville (she retired in the first set due to an injury), and Elena Rybakina (7-5, 6-4).

She is also no stranger to beating top 10 players having overcome Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, and Aryna Sabalenka in 2021.

Badosa, Yet to Lose a Set

Paula Badosa, ranked just one place below Maria Sakkari, has flawlessly navigated her way to the semis in Tennis Paradise. Her list of opponents in the valley includes Tereza Martincova, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Leylah Fernandez, and Veronika Kudermetova.

It is certainly impressive, considering that she wasn’t in the best form before the tournament.

The 24-year-old Spaniard had incurred surprising losses in WTA Dubai (Elena-Gabriela Ruse 3-6, 7-5, 4-6) and Doha (Cori Gauff 2-6, 3-6).

That said, Badosa enjoyed a decent start to the new season with a title run in Sydney Classic and a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open. Like Sakkari, she too enjoyed a stellar spell in 2021 and reached the concluding stage in many tournaments.

Sakkari v Badosa Prediction and Tip

Maria Sakkari has been far more consistent than Badosa on the whole, especially considering her results in the Slams and other big events. She is also more experienced (although only marginally), and hungry for a big win. She makes for an appealing bet and should do well to reach the finals. However, the match may turn into a slogfest with several games.
