Baez Will be Tested on Hard Courts
Six titles from nine finals at the Challenger level shot him to fame last year. And the 21-year-old is now replicating that form at the senior level in 2022.
World No. 66 Sebastian Baez comes to Miami with a 10-8 record this season, and that includes a maiden tour-level final in Santiago, where he went down fighting to Pedro Martinez.
However, all his successes have come on clay, and he is yet to make an impression on hard courts. He is 2-4 on the surface this year, with the two wins coming over Christopher O’Connell in Sydney and clay specialist Albert Ramos Vinolas at the Australian Open. Most recently, he was outplayed by Nick Kyrgios in the first round at Indian Wells and also lost in the opening round of the Phoenix Challenger last week.
While these are still early days for the Argentinian’s career, he has had his moments on hard courts as well, with his second round defeat against Stefanos Tsitsipas in opening major standing out. Baez took a set against the Greek before going down in four.
The gallant display came a couple of days after he had notched a gritty five-set win over Ramos-Vinolas in the first round. So early signs suggest that he is prepared to fight. Can he begin with a win in Miami?

Majchrzak Making Miami Debut
He has had a good start to the year, breaking back into the top 100 and constantly making a move up the rankings. Currently at a career-high ranking of 75, Kamil Majchrzak heads to Miami with an 8-5 record this season.
The 26-year-old, who began the season by winning all his matches at the ATP Cup, made it to the semifinals of the Pune Open and is 8-4 on hard courts.
Most recently the Pole defeated Aljaz Bedene in the first round of the Indian Wells Open but was blown away by eventual champion Taylor Fritz in the second round. He also played in the Phoenix Challenger last week, winning against Hugo Gaston but falling to Fernando Verdasco.
While Majchrzak has won eight times this year on the tour, most of those wins have come against players who are ranked much lower than him. It will be interesting to see how he plays Baez on his Miami debut.
Sebastian Baez v Kamil Majchrzak Prediction and Tip
While Majchrzak has a better record on hard courts, he may still find the going tough against the up and coming Baez. Expect a close match with Baez advancing.
