Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour.

Tsonga Continues his Long Return to Glory

Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga finds himself battling form woes as he looks to regain his former glory. The 36-year-old Frenchman has not played that much tennis in the last couple of seasons due to injuries and inactivity due to Covid-19.

As a result, he now finds himself ranking in the early 200s and is starting in the Miami Masters under the protected ranking norm.

As a three-time quarterfinalist here, Tsonga has got a rich pedigree in the competition but his lack of momentum will make things difficult for him.

Five tournaments in, his best stint came in the ATP events of Montpellier and Marseille where he reached the second round. Tsonga also played in a couple of Challenger events but wasn’t particularly successful there either.

Thompson, Hoping to Impress

Jordan Thompson of Australia hasn’t been particularly impressive in 2022. Barring a quarterfinal run in ATP Dallas (defeating Feliciano Lopez and Brandon Nakashima en route), the 27-year-old has succumbed mainly in the early rounds.

The Dallas feat was followed by a first-round loss to Mitchell Krueger in Delray Beach and then, a second-round stint in Indian Wells. Impressively enough, he did defeat David Goffin in the opener but ended up bowing out to Grigor Dimitrov next.

Thompson hasn’t reached a singles final since 2019 June and has spent most of his previous season battling a similar rut. There were a few exceptions – the current World No. 78 reached the quarterfinal in Atlanta, Los Cabos, and the semifinal in Newport.

Thompson v Tsonga Prediction and Tip

Overall, Tsonga is much ahead in terms of trophies and results in big events when compared to Thompson – but it is quite unlikely for that to be helpful here.

Nonetheless, the Australian is not coming off that great of a run either which makes this an evenly matched affair.
