Badosa Wants a Deep Run in Miami

Badosa reached the semi-finals in Indian Wells, before losing in three sets to Maria Sakkari, and will be eyeing another deep run in Miami, knowing, that with the retirement of Ashleigh Barty, she is almost guaranteed to move into the top five of the world rankings.

Certainly her progress to this stage of the tournament has been relatively serene so far.

Given a first round bye, she then defeated Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in straight sets to set up a tie with the Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the world number 47.

It was the Spaniard who forced the opening break of serve midway through the first set and, another break gave her the set.

She suffered a temporary setback when she was broken at the start of the second set, but hit back to level straight away, and then broke Putintseva again. Another break to love sealed the win.

Fruhvirtova Enjoying Unexpected Success in Florida

Fruhverttova is wholly inexperienced at this level, but, having been given a wildcard in Miami, the 16  year old has taken full advantage of it, with a string of impressive performances against women ranked much higher than her.

She began with a straight sets victory over Danka Kovinic of Montenegro, the world number 66, and then stepped up in class to beat Elsie Mertens, currently ranked 24th in the world, battling the Belgian for two sets before running away with the third.

Her third round opponent Victoria Azarenka is twice her age, and has won the Miami tournament three times in the past.

But the teenager was not overawed in the slightest, broke the Azarenka serve early, and, after dropping her own serve, broke twice more to take the first set.

She was a break up in the second set before Azarenka was forced to retire with an injury.

Badosa v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip

Badosa will begin the heavy favourite against Fruhvertova, but the Czech teenager has proved she is no respecter of reputations in Miami, and the Spaniard would do well not to underestimate her.
