Hurkacz Powers Past Rinderknech

Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz extended his unbeaten run in Miami to seven matched as he powered past France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the second round.

The World no. 10 struck 17 aces, saved the only break point that he faced and converted two of five break points to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

With the win, the eighth seed improved to 11-5 this season. The first set was a close one, with neither player able to break. Rinderknech had a breaking opportunity though which he could not take. Hurkacz edged the tiebreak to seize the initiative and then raced to a 4-0 start before closing out the match in an hour and 38 minutes.

Karatsev Knocks out Humbert

Aslan Karatsev ended a three-match losing streak by defeating France’s Ugo Humbert in the second round of the Miami Open.

Karatsev, who lost in the third round on debut last year, will be hoping to reach the Round of 16 this season.

With the win over Humbert, the World No. 32 improved his season record to 8-6. He had begun the season by winning the Sydney Open title but had lost form since then, going 3-6 in the next six tournaments.

Against the World No. 45, Karatsev was off to a 0-2 start in the first set, but he came back strong, wrapping up the set with two breaks. With the first set in the bag, Karatsev took control of the second right from the start, eventually winning the match 7-5, 6-2.

The win ended a three-match losing skid for Karatsev, who went down to Benjamin Bonzi in the quarterfinal in Marseille, Mackenzie McDonald in the first round in Dubai and Steve Johnson in the second round at Indian Wells in the run-up to Miami. Having returned to winning ways can he now take out the defending champion?
