Cuevas Struggling for Consistency
The 36-year-old Pablo Cuevas is 1-4 this season. That win came against World No. 918 Ajit Rai of New Zealand in the Davis Cup. He lost his second singles match against New Zealand though, falling to World No. 776 Rubin Statham. His other defeats came agains Federico Coria in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells and to Pablo Andujar in Rio.
Most recently, he featured in the Santa Cruz De La Sierra, Bolivia Challenger in March, losing in the semifinals of that tournament.
He has reached nine of his 10 tour-level finals on clay, and has won all six of his titles on the surface.
In Houston, the World No. 105 has a 3-3 record, having reached the semifinals of the tournament 11 years ago.

Purcell to Make Main Draw Debut on Clay
Max Purcell is 0-1 at the tour level this year, having lost his only match at the ATP Cup to Jannik Sinner.
The Australian, ranked No. 164, has either lost in the qualifiers or struggled to go deep at Challenger tournaments. His best this year was a quarterfinal finish at the Bengaluru-2 Challenger.
Purcell, who finished runner-up at the Australian Open doubles event along with partner Matthew Ebden this year, had also reached the doubles final at the Melbourne major in 2020.
The 24-year-old, who hasn’t played a lot of singles matches at the top level, will be making his tour-level debut on clay in Houston. Although, he is a better player on hard courts, he will be hoping to carry his qualifying round momentum into the main draw.
Purcell defeated America’s Donald Young in straight sets and then rallied from a set down to beat Tunisia’s Moez Echargui 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second qualifying round.
Cuevas v Purcell Prediction and Tip
Cuevas’s form at the Bolivian Challenger two weeks ago will be a huge confidence booster. He is vastly experienced and should edge past the Aussie in the first round.
Tip: Cuevas to win: 3/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
